Apartment Antinori Garden

The Palazzo Aldobrandini and Apartment Antinori Garden was constructed during the first half of the Fourteenth century and precisely at a time in which Florence began to expand beyond the boundaries of the ancient roman nucleus.

The Palace was commissioned by Messer Lapo a member of the wealthy Aldobrandini family who had made their fortune in the commerce of spices. Via delle Belledonne was at that time an important road which connected the Mercato Vecchio (market square) and Via Strozzi, to the Porta del Trebbio, the city door that led out towards the north. Although the family was already very wealthy, they were still greatly tied to trade and so they chose this location which was the main commercial artery leading out of the city. With the opening of a new bridge, the Ponte Santa Trinita, with its continuation (now Via Tornabuoni), several important palaces were built.

The new road gained importance and eventually Via delle Belledonne became a secondary side street. In the Nineteenth century, the palazzo housed several painter workshops and it is known that the celebrated painter Ingres had his studio in one of the apartments. This new destination is probably the reason for which most of the flats have very large windows.

  • Apartment Belvedere

Palazzo Bardi is situated on the south side of the river Arno. On one side, it overlooks Via de' Bardi, and on the other it enjoys spectacular, if not unique, views over the Ponte Vecchio, the Uffizi Gallery and the Cathedral. The building's original structure dates back to the 15 th century, when a myriad of little cobbled roads branched off from the Ponte Vecchio into the Oltrarno, one of the city's most charming and typical quarters. The Arno's banks were flanked by buildings belonging to wealthy aristocratic families (e.g. the Bardi family) - for this reason their residences were known as palazzi .

Palazzo Bardi was modified until the mid 19 th century when an architect called Enrico Poggi was asked to draw up an architectural and landscape plan to turn Florence into a capital city (a role which it maintained for five years, between 1865 and 1870, following Italy's unification in 1860). Poggi wanted to give Florence a look of uniformity and subdued elegance without creating a violent contrast with its Renaissance architecture. He therefore decided to maintain the Renaissance color palette of cream plaster and grey pietra serena stone, which is visible in so many buildings throughout the city.

Lungarno Torrigiani was included in Poggi's plan and it is easy to see how he drew inspiration from the more ancient buildings on the river's opposite side. The lungarni together with the viali leading up to the Piazzale Michelangelo were meant to be a place where Florentines could enjoy afternoon strolls and socialize in the open air.

  • Apartment San Gaetano

Apartment San Gaetano at Palazzo Rimbotti dates back to the 14 th century, at a time when Florence was beginning to expand beyond its original Roman centre. Compared to the Via delle Belle Donne, Via Tornabuoni and Piazza Antinori were then parallel side streets leading out towards the city's exits.

It was only later, towards the mid 15 th century, that Via Tornabuoni and Piazza Antinori were expanded and became the place where rich Florentines bought and refurbished large buildings to turn them into stately homes. Throughout the centuries, Palazzo Rimbotti was extensively remodelled, acquiring its present day aspect around the mid 18 th century.

The apartment has an enormous sitting room overlooking the façade of the church of San Gaetano. At night the church is beautifully floodlit, and the white marble Medici crest, visible directly opposite the sitting room, stands out creating a very dramatic effect.

San Gaetano is a spacious, luminous and comfortable apartment made up of an entrance hall with a storage cupboard, which leads into a large living/dining room with two big windows with a stunning view on the Cupola del Brunelleschil and the Sanf Gaetano church. The furniture is extremely elegant with two large sofas and armchairs, a day-bed and coffee table. The fireplace has a marble frame and the walls are adorned with beautiful pictures and prints individually chosen for the apartment.
